Burglary is something that every household should be concerned about but luckily these days we’re quite spoiled for choice when it comes to home security options. But what should you go for to really help protect you and your family?
New research from Co-op Insurance has just revealed the top ten deterrents for home thieves as explained by former burglars themselves… so it could certainly be worth taking a look!
The list was made up of CCTV cameras, the sound of a barking dog, strong heavy doors, the TV being turned on, locked uPVC windows, cars parked on the driveway, an overlooked property, surrounding fences, gates outside the property and motion-activated security lights.
Of course, you also need to be vigilant when it comes to security precautions – but many seem to forget their responsibilities in this regard. The study also found that 55 per cent sleep with their windows open at night, 24 per cent leave doors unlocked while in the house and 12 per cent admit to leaving their garden gates open.
“Our research shows that almost half (44 per cent) of thieves are opportunists and so it’s really important that home and car owners are vigilant and think carefully about the security of their homes and vehicles. Nobody should have to go through the trauma of having their property burgled and there are some small measures which homeowners should be mindful of to ensure any opportunists cannot be tempted,” head of home insurance at the Co-op Caroline Hunter said.
The summer months also make it more likely that unforced burglaries will take place, as doors and windows will be open more frequently… so make sure you lock and close them when going out or if there’s no one in the room.
